Newsletter Sept 6 2017

Teach and Learn

Maximize learning by tapping into the latest brain research and simplify your planning at the same time!
Dear friends and colleagues,

Welcome back! This is an exciting time of year! Every new year brings fresh challenges and opportunities to grow and learn along with our students. I’d like to share with you a powerful teaching process called P.L.A.N. for Better Learning. See https://savagebirdlearning.com/.

It is a framework for learning that works in any classroom, with any content and engages All learners at All levels. P.L.A.N. was developed by Kevin Bird and Kirk Savage and is based on the works of Faye Brownlie, Susan Close and other researchers. It is a brain based, classroom friendly process, structured on the use of explicit strategies to help students understand text and content.

In this newsletter I will give a brief outline of each step. In future newsletters I will go into more depth and take a look at explicit strategies that can be used in each of the steps as you develop your lesson plans.

Basically there are four steps involved in structuring your lesson plans using a before/during/after framework.

  • Preparation for Learning
  • Learning Sequence
  • Authentic Application
  • New Thinking

Preparation for Learning

In this step we set the stage, we make connections, we activate prior knowledge, make predictions, and ask questions.

Learning Sequence

The text or content is presented in manageable chunks to help our brains process and construct meaning. Explicit strategies are taught to help students make sense of the material. Students are invited to make images, make inferences and reach interpretations.

Authentic Application

Students are asked to use the information in a new situation to demonstrate understanding.

New Thinking

The metacognitive piece that seals in learning.Students reflect on the learning experience from beginning to end considering what they learned, how they learned it,and why it is important.

If you’re looking for a way to organize your lesson plans that will meet your curriculum goals, build community, and meet the needs of all your students in an engaging way…THIS IS IT! To leave comments, questions and thoughts visit my blog at www.connectlearnreflect.com.

Next week let’s focus on Step One…Preparation for Learning.

Wishing you all the best as you begin your new year!

  1. First off I would like to say great blog! I had
a quick question in which I’d lijke to aask iff you don’t mind.
I was curious to find out how you center yourself and clear
your thoughts prior to writing. I have had a tough tme clearing my
thoughts in getting my ideas out. I truly do enjoy weiting hhowever it just seems like the fiirst 10 to
15 minutes are wasted just tryiing to figure out how to begin. Any recommendations or hints?

    Kudos!

    1. Hi cami. Thank you for visiting our site and for your comment.
I know getting started writing can be difficult at times. One way to focus your thoughts prior to writing is to make an idea web.
Just take a blank piece of paper and put your intended topic in the center. Draw connecting lines from the center topic and let your ideas flow freely as you jot down, in note form, all the ideas that come to you around that topic. Soon one idea will lead to another and more connections can be made. Review all your ideas and see how you would like to organize them in your writing…and then just start writing! You can always reorganize or add more later. Best of luck to you! Marlene

  2. I was curious if you ever thought of changing the structure of your site?

Its very well written; I love what youve got to say.
